In the Shadow of the Painter and Lover: Júlia Peraire i Ricarte, Muse of Ramon Casas

Júlia Peraire i Ricarte (Sant Martí de Provençals, 1888 – Barcelona, 1941), who worked as a model from 1905 and married the renowned Catalan modernist painter Ramon Casas in 1922, has recently begun to gain recognition as the primary muse behind Casas's artistic output. Over one hundred portraits, including paintings and drawings recently identified, highlight Júlia's profound influence on Casas's work, placing her alongside iconic muses such as Saskia for Rembrandt, Aline for Raimundo de Madrazo, or Gala for Dalí.

Júlia and Ramon Casas first met at the renowned Maison Dorée gathering in Barcelona when she was a young and beautiful lottery ticket seller in Plaza Cataluña. Casas was immediately captivated by her youth and freshness—she was twenty-five years younger than him. After several years of companionship and mutual understanding, they formalized their relationship by marrying on September 29, 1922.

For decades, Júlia's figure remained anonymous, relegated to the background of art history. Notably, during Casas's lifetime, Júlia was never explicitly mentioned in the titles of publicly exhibited works, a common practice for private portraits. Even Josep Maria Jordà, a close friend and the painter's first biographer, did not mention Júlia in his 1931 biography. Alberto del Castillo, in his 1958 book, only referenced her in the chapter addressing "the artist's complete decadence."

Among the works featuring Júlia, numerous portraits stand out, showcasing her in various poses and attire, revealing Casas's unique sensitivity to subtly yet captivatingly portray his muse's sensuality. Júlia's apparent lack of overt expression was compensated by Casas’s mastery of color and his subtle ability to convey nuanced emotions—key elements contributing to these portraits' widespread success.

Fortunately, contemporary research has allowed Júlia Peraire's rediscovery, emphasizing her crucial role not only as a model but also as an essential inspiration behind Casas's mature and emotionally intricate work. This renewed interest in Júlia has spurred exhibitions, academic studies, and publications, affirming her central place in the narrative of Catalan modernist art.

Today, Júlia Peraire emerges as a reclaimed symbol of historically overlooked muses whose influence was decisive yet unfairly minimized. This rediscovery invites us to view Ramon Casas's art from a new, more intimate and emotional perspective, reflecting the profound personal and artistic bond that united him with Júlia until the end of their days.
