It was on the territory of Old Kyiv that the first stone church of Russia was built - the Tithe Church (end of the 10th century). There were several princely palaces near St. Andrew's Church. Several gates led to the city: Lyadski, Zhydivski, Zoloti (ruins have been preserved), Sofiyski, there was an entrance from Podil. The territory was destroyed in 1240 during an Mongol-Tatar attack. In those days, most stone temples and monasteries were destroyed.

In the XVII century on the territory of Old Kiev there are suburbs, where the Moscow army lives. In the 1830s and 1850s, the site was redeveloped, and archeological excavations were carried out, which made it possible to discover the remains of the Golden Gate and the Irene Church. Since then, the administrative and business center of Kyiv has been moved here. On July 1, 1894, an electric tram connected Duma Square (now Independence Square) and Sinna Square (now Lviv Square) along Velyka Zhytomyrska Street. In 1905, a funicular was opened connecting Podil with the Upper Town.

On the territory of Old Kyiv there are unique monuments that are the pearls of cultural and spiritual heritage of Ukraine: St. Sophia Cathedral (about 1017-1032) and buildings of the former St. Sophia Monastery (late XVII - mid XVIII century), the ruins of the Golden Gate (after XI century) , St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral (12th century, rebuilt in 1997-2001), St. Andrew's Church (mid-18th century). Numerous residential and public buildings of the middle of the XIX - first half of the XX century have been preserved. In the 1930s, there were projects of radical reconstruction of this area, but these projects were not implemented (however, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral, Trinitarian, St. George's and Tithe Churches were destroyed).

Nowadays this district is the business center of the city, the tourist center of Kyiv. The Museum of the History of Ukraine, the Sofia Museum-Reserve, and the Museum of Spiritual Heritage operate here (icons have been exhibited since the 14th century). The area near St. Andrew's Church has been declared a protected area.
